The 2003 Avan Cepas Centenarias, is made from prephyloxera, 100+ year old Tempranillo vines. A profound, dense ruby/purplecolored effort, it demonstrates what old vines, low yields, and impeccable winemaking can achieve in a favored terroir. A striking minerality is intertwined with a cascade of blackberry, cassis, smoke, roasted coffee, and hints of licorice and new saddle leather. Beautifully textured and ripe, but neither jammy nor heavy, it is a wine of tremendous uplift, nuances, concentration, and tannin (largely concealed by the amazing concentration). Anticipated maturity: 20082020+. This is a fabulous discovery!
