Manu
Manu
Manu is this bodega’s top wine, a tiny production (400 case) cuvée produced by Vinos Jeromín in the Vinos de Madrid DO region. Manuel (‘Manu’) Martinez is proprietor and winemaker of this third generation bodega, which produces organic high quality wines in the three districts of Vinos de Madrid. Manuel is also the talented winemaker behind Vinos Sin Ley G-5. The wine Manu is the result of Manuel Martinez’s search for something greater. At the beginning, Manu was a wine made only for family and friends. As the winemaker’s circle became larger, he had to open his special cuvée to the world. The Vinos de Madrid wine region is undergoing a rapid evolution. In addition to being home to the capital of Spain, Vinos de Madrid has recently been one of the most interesting and innovative wine regions on the Iberian Peninsula. The outskirts of the storied royal city of Madrid are filled with old high elevation Tempranillo vineyards planted in ideal soils. Vinos de Madrid is the great unknown now freshly discovered. Most Spaniards are unaware that this region makes wine and because Vinos de Madrid is not yet “on the radar” of Spanish wine consumers, today it is a great source of incredible wines.
What makes this wine unique?
Manu is Manuel Martinez’s statement of excellence as a winemaker. This wine is a showcase for the true potential of Manuel Martinez. In Manu’s own words, “There is no room for compromises here." The blend of grapes (coupage) used to make Manu varies each year depending on the vintage.
Rating history:
2006 90RP; 2005 93RPGrape:
40% Tempranillo, 40% Syrah, 20% Garnacha
Pairing Suggestions:
This wine has plenty of dense, aromatic red and black fruit flavors with toasty oak and vanilla notes. Pair this with grilled rare lamb kebabs, thick-cut aged beefsteak or aged hard cheeses.
Vinification and ageing:
The wine was aged for 13 months in 225-liter oak barrels, 80% French and 20% Russian.
Production:
400 cases are made; 35 for the U.S.
Location, Soil, Climate:
The vineyards are located in Zone 7, southeast of Madrid, in the town of Arganda del Rey, within the subregion of Arganda at 645 meters (2,116 ft.) elevation. The Tempranillo vines are 60 years old; the Syrah are 15 years old. The poor clay and limestone soils yield concentrated small grapes that have balanced sugar and acidity. For climate, the average temperature from April-October is 64.5ºF with 19.4 inches of yearly rainfall. The southern Continental climate has hot days and cool nights, which are crucial to the slower, balanced ripening of the grapes.
Tasting notes:
Manu is an opaque purple-colored wine. It offers up a super-expressive bouquet of bacon, tar, mineral, pencil lead, blueberry, black raspberry, and licorice. Smooth-textured, layered, ripe, and sweetly fruited.
