Muti Albariño
Muti Albariño
Muti Albariño is made by Bodegas y Viñedos Raul Pérez, of the white wines that Raul makes, this has the most bright, electric acidity. The grapes that make Muti come from three different vineyards. The first vineyard is 100 years old, with granite soil, located in the town of Paliña, just 30 meters (100 feet) from the Atlantic Ocean. It’s so close to the ocean you can detect a mineral, salty aspect. The other vineyards have forty-year-old vines, located in the towns of Meaño and Dena. Raul wants Muti to show the youthful vibrancy of the Albariño grape. Half of the wine is aged in oak and the rest is un-oaked. This results in a pure expression of Albariño without an undue influence of oak. Muti means ‘mother’ in German. This wine is made to honor Patrick Mata’s mother. Raul Pérez is one of Spain’s finest winemakers and some wine trade veterans believe Raul is among a handful of the best winemakers in the world. Raul believes great wines are made in the vineyard and he has an uncanny knack for knowing what his vineyards need to achieve their greatest potential. As his virtuoso winemaking talent has become known, many winemakers now seek to collaborate with Raul.
What makes this wine unique?
As indicated by the name, Muti (‘mother’) is a wine made in honor of all mothers. With Muti, Raul wants to show the youthful vibrancy of the Albariño grape. Only six barrels are made for the world. The dry, mineral and citrus characters of this wine are a superb match for oysters and fresh seafood.

Pairing Suggestions:
Muti Albariño shows fresh, stone fruit aromas and almost searing, clean acidity and a strong mineral character that together are a perfect match for shellfish, seafood and lighter salads.
Vinification and ageing:
The wine is macerated on the skins for 24 hours. Half the wine is oak aged for 12 months and half is aged in stainless steel tank. The portion aged in oak aged goes through aging (elevage) in large, 500-liter oak barrels.
Production:
133 cases made, 40 for the U.S.
Location, Soil, Climate:
The vineyards are located within the Rías Baixas DO region (Zone 1), in the Val do Salnes subzone. Located in Spain’s upper northwest corner, Rías Baixas is just above the border with Portugal. Rías Baixas means ‘low estuaries,’ a reference to the area’s many rivers that lead to the ocean.
There are three different vineyards whose grapes go into Muti Albarino. The first parcel has 100-year-old vines planted on granite soil and is located in the town of Paliña. The second parcel has 40-year-old vines on dark soil, located in the town of Dena. The third parcel has 40-year-old vines on granite soil, located in the town of Meaño. Of the three vineyards farmed to make Muti Albarino, we find predominantly two soil types, 75% granite and 25% dark soil. The landscape is low undulating hills and the vineyards are planted on the slopes and on the flat valley floors. This area’s climatic conditions give this wine an “Atlantic” character. Of the 5 subzones in Rías Baixas, Val do Salnes is the coolest due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. Yearly rainfall is above 1,700 millimeters (66 inches), or what one would expect in one of the wettest regions in Spain. The area is quite foggy with an average temperature from April-October of 63.4°F.
Tasting notes:
Muti Albariño is a light gold-colored wine, it gives up a splendid bouquet of mineral, lemon meringue, peach, and an assortment of tropical scents. On the palate vibrant acidity, intense flavors, and exceptional depth make for something special.
