Raul Perez Albarin

Raul Perez Albarin

The Raul Pérez Albarín is another effort by Bodegas y Viñedos Raul Pérez to showcase the forgotten indigenous grapes of a region. Raul Pérez Albarín is made from the white Albarín variety indigenous to Leon, 75 km east of Bierzo, and not to be confused with Albariño from Galicia. Most vignerons in the Leon area don’t trust the quality of Albarín and believe it’s inferior, so local producers make grappa from it. Through this glorious wine, Raul Pérez greatly begs to differ. His total production is 120 cases, and if you are lucky enough to taste it, prepare to be transported to an unknown place with new flavors. This brilliant artisanal, handcrafted wine must be experienced to be believed. Raul Pérez is one of Spain’s finest winemakers and some wine trade veterans believe Raul is among a handful of the best winemakers in the world. Raul believes great wines are made in the vineyard and he has an uncanny knack for knowing what his vineyards need to achieve their greatest potential. As his great talent has become known, many winemakers now seek to collaborate with Raul.

What makes this wine unique?

This wine is made from a nearly extinct indigenous variety from León. This white grape, Albarín, makes wines that can age for decades. This is a very limited-production wine: 2 barrels or 120 4-pack cases for the world. Made with organically grown grapes, harvested by hand. The head pruned vines are over sixty years old.

Rating history:

2007 94RP&IWC

Grape:

100% Albarín.

Pairing Suggestions:

Will pair well with grilled octopus, baked oysters and clams, pork and veal sausage and expressive, “stinky” and “buttery” triple cream, soft cheeses.

Vinification and ageing:

There is maceration on the skins for 3 days, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tank with no malolactic fermentation, to retain the wine’s clean acidity and freshness. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, two and three years old.

Production:

120 4-pack cases made; 70 for the U.S.

Location, Soil, Climate:

The vineyards are located in Zone 2, within the town of Pajares de Los Oteros, just south of the historic city of Leon, at 794 meters (2,605 ft.) elevation. The soils are composed of brown rocky alluvial deposits and limestone. Regarding climate, Leon is located within Zone 2, with an average temperature from April-October of 58.7°F, and annual rainfall of 21.9 inches. This area’s typically wide day/night temperature shifts effectively limit which grape varieties can thrive here. The windy conditions of this part of Spain are key in eliminating undesirable humidity. Grapes grown in this area have thick skins, very assertive aromas and are driven by bright acidity.

Tasting notes:

RP Albarin is extremely vibrant and nervy, with litchi and white flower aromas and fennel and green apple flavors. On the palate, the wine is charged, with firm structure and a lingering mineral quality before a long, delicate finish. Notes by Patrick Mata.
