Ultreia La Claudina
Ultreia La Claudina
Ultreia La Claudina is a single-vineyard wine made by Bodegas y Viñedos Raul Pérez in the Bierzo DO region. La Claudina sets the standard for wines made from the Godello grape. This rich, profound, mineral-driven white wine is at once startlingly subtle and almost painfully intense. In structure and character it is more like a red wine than a white. Raul Perez explains his dichotomy of styles: “I make red wines with the soul of whites and whites that have the soul of reds.” Claudina is the name of the vineyard. Godello is quickly becoming the most well known Spanish white grape due to its brilliant ageing potential. Raul Pérez is one of Spain’s finest winemakers and some wine trade veterans believe Raul is among a handful of the best winemakers in the world. Raul believes great wines are made in the vineyard and he has an uncanny knack for knowing what his vineyards need to achieve their greatest potential. As his virtuoso winemaking talent has become known, many winemakers now seek to collaborate with Raul.
What makes this wine unique?
This wine is an extremely low production (two barrels) wine made from a single vineyard. This wine is 100% Godello from the Bierzo DO region. A wine made to age, La Claudina exhibits the firm structure of a red wine.
Rating history:
2007 96RPGrape:
100% Godello, from a vineyard planted in 2002. The vines are trained on trellis in the double cordon system.
Pairing Suggestions:
With an explosive profusion of aromas, this wine shows astounding minerality, with notes of stone fruits, smoke and burned rope. This wine recalls the power and finesse of Montrachet or Batard Montrachet in a great vintage, along with the earthy minerality of old vines Pouilly Fuisse and Grand Cru Chablis. On the palate, the wine has almost painfully intense flavors that are extremely clean, with neat acidity, great balance and an extremely long finish. Pair this with the best piece of grilled swordfish, yellowtail or mahi you can find, simply prepared with herbs and beurre blanc. This also pairs well with soft, double- and triple-crème cheeses.
Vinification and ageing:
2 700-liter barrels and 1 225-liter barrique are vinified. The wine is aged for 11 months in French oak, during which time there is stirring of the lees (batonnage) to enrich the wine’s aromas and texture during aging.
Production:
125 cases made; 25 for the U.S.
Location, Soil, Climate:
The vineyards are located within Zone 1. El Bierzo, sometimes called ‘the gateway to Galicia,’ is enclosed on both sides by mountains. The Claudina vineyard is 1 km southwest of the town Valtuille de Abajo in the Campo de la Choca area at 510 meters (1,673 ft.) elevation. The vineyard is composed of 95% sandy and 5% clay soils with small river stones. This soil type is poor in nutrients, which naturally reduces the vigor and yields of the vines. As a result, the grapes produced are small, and full of concentrated and expressive aromas and flavors. For climate, the area’s average temperature from April-October is 61.42°F. A yearly average rainfall of 28 in. makes this one of the driest and warmest wine regions in northwestern Spain.
Tasting notes:
La Claudina is light gold-colored with an amber tint, it offers up a complex aromatic array of baking spices, dried herbs, minerals, and tropical fruits. Rich and extracted on the palate, this is an expression of Godello unlike any other.
