Dehesa la Torrecilla is the name of the estate owned by the Tirado Family. The 200ha (494 acre) estate is located in the town of Trujillo in the southwest of Spain in the region of Extremadura near the Portuguese border. Extremadura is the second largest wine region of Spain producing wonderful tempranillo wines which are often blended with Cabernet and Syrah. The town of Trujillo has been a special place for winemaking since Greek times 3,000 years ago. The town of Trujillo is known for its granite soil, making wines that communicate a sense of minerality that is truly unique and highly desired by top winemakers in the region of Extremadura. The Tirado family is known for its love of nature from vineyards to breeding Spanish horses. The cattle brand depicted on the label connects these two realities of winemaking and horse breeding that are inseparable for the Tirado family.

What makes this wine unique?

An estate wine produced by one of the greatest families of Extremadura. All the grapes are organically farmed. The town of Trujillo is famous for its Granite soil resulting in wines that communicate a sense of minerality that is special and different from neighboring vineyards outside of this town.

Pairing Suggestions:

Dehesa la Torrecilla pairs extremely well with a prime cut of steak. The fruit and berries and forest flavors of Dehesa la Torrecilla complement the smoky, meaty flavors of the steak. Other foods that go particularly well with Dehesa are grilled lamb and medium aged cheeses such as Manchego.

Vinification and ageing:

After fermentation in stainless steel tanks the wine ages in French barrels that are 2-3 years old for a total of 4 months.

Location, Soil, Climate:

Located in the south west of Spain in the town of Trujillo within the region of Extremadura. The windy condition of this territory allows all the vines to be farmed organically. All the vines in the Torrecilla estate are tended in slate and clay soil at 564 m (1,850 ft) elevation. Average temperatures between April-October are 28C (82.4F) and Annual rainfall is 300mm (11.8 in). Harvest takes place early during the month of August to pick grapes that are balanced in acidity and sugar.

Tasting notes:

Tightly wound black and blue fruit aromas unfold slowly, picking up notes of woodsmoke and licorice. On the palate, juicy dark berry flavors are given depth and sweetness by a hint of mocha, which builds on the back half. Finishes on a spicy note, with dusty tannins adding shape. notes by Joshua Raynolds.
