Proprietor: Cesca Vicent founded the winery in 1999 but family owned
vineyards since the 13th century with 40 acres of vineyard land in the
town of Gratallops. Her first vintage release was 2000.
Winemaker / Vineyard Manager: Emili Esteve and Cesca Vincent
Robert.
Location: Located in Zone 5 in the north east of Spain between Terra
Alta and Penedés at 817 ft altitude. The vineyards are located in the lower
valley and the winery in the small town “pueblo” of Gratallops.
Wines Made: Lo Piot and Abat Domenech.
Climate: High Mediterranean (Zone 5) hot days and moderate nights
with vineyard at 816 ft. altitude with average temperatures from April to
October of 65.5º F. with rainfall of 11.6 inches; both cooler and lower
respectively than most DO’s in this climatic zone. The moderate
temperatures, low rainfall, high sun exposure and cool nights combine to
create this very unique microclimate of Priorat, producing wines that are
simultaneously both ripe and fresh with vibrant acidity.
Soils: The vineyards of Cesca within the valley of Gratallops account for
one of the most determining quality factors. The topsoil is composed of
volcanic slate stones with subsoil consisting of different layers of clay and
river stones. Soils are very low in organic matter and low pH giving
higher levels of acidity to the wines. The steep 7-degree angle slopes on
average, facilitates water drainage and faster water evaporation,
producing smaller berries--with greater skin to juice ratios, revealing
greater intensity of fruit flavors.
What makes Cesca unique?
* Small production wines from estate
owned family vineyards since the 13th century and possibly the oldest
vineyards in the region.
* Cesca’s pioneering efforts in participating in
the “first-wave “of the revolutionary changes that Priorat has undergone
in the last 10 years.
* Wines produced are driven by structural balance
and a distinct elegant quality in contrast, some Priorat wines exhibiting
high alcohol, not well integrated into the wine—hot on the palate and
finish.
