Winery  Wines

Proprietor: Bodegas San Isidro, founded in 1954 with 600 associated vine growers, owning 9,839 acres (4,000 hectares) mostly Tempranillo vines.

Winemaker /Vineyard Manager: Almudena Martos Vilaplana.

Location: Zone 7, at altitude 2,238 ft., in the town of Pedro Muñoz, south west of la Mancha (the largest wine region in the world!). La Mancha has a total of 473,707 acres of vineyards amounting to 29% of all areas under vine in Spain. The second largest DO is Rioja with a total of 154,100 acres. Just la Mancha produces more wine than the
country of Australia which has 303,940 acres!

Wines made: Carril de Cotos Tinto (plus other wines not currently imported by Ole Imports).

Climate: Low Continental Mediterranean (Zone 7) with hot days and moderate nights with average temperatures of 68.4º, low rainfall of 8 inches from April to October. La Mancha is warmer than Rioja Baja (Continental Mediterranean Climate). The lower latitude of La Mancha
gives higher average temperatures, even at higher altitude of 2,238 ft. vs. 1,230 ft in Rioja Baja. The ripening period in La Mancha is relatively short with harvest usually in mid August. The warm climate and low levels of rainfall, result in grapes that are rich in sugar, medium to low in acidity and with toasted aromas due to prolonged hours of sun exposure.

Soil: San Isidro vineyards are rich in chalk but poor in organic matter with clay subsoil. Most soils are deep with some roots penetrating 39 ft. through to the watering retaining clay. The only things that grow in La
Mancha are vines and olive trees!

What makes San Isidro unique?

* 1,000 acres of over 110 years old, pre-phylloxera vines.

* Small yields resulting in high skin to juice
ratios.

* Estate owned vineyards.
