Proprietors: Bodegas Torremorón founded in 1957 and owned by 300 associated vine growers and consisting of 500 acres of vineyards.
Winemaker / Vineyard Managers: Sandra Ayuso / Guillermo Pérez.
Location: Located in Zone 2 within the province of Burgos (eastern sub-region of Ribera del Duero) in the Town of Quintanamanvirgo at an altitude of 2,703 ft. (824 m). Quintanamanvirgo has a population of 106 people.
Wines Made: Torremorón Tinto, Torremorón Rose and Torremorón Roble.
Climate: Continental climate (Zone 2) cold nights and hot days with moderately low levels of rainfall. Wines produced here are usually deeper in color, more concentrated and aromatic than wines made in the western part of Ribera del Duero. Higher in altitude than Rueda and Toro thus lower temperatures averaging 59.8º F. from April to October, 9.8 inches of annual rainfall in Quintanamanvirgo . The temperatures in the Torremorón vineyards are cooler than neighboring producers at Vizcarra and Mibal. These conditions provide a longer ripening season, resulting in wines with greater complexity and expressive aromatic intensity.
Soils: Composed of sand with small particles of clay and limestone subsoil . Moderate to low in organic matter reducing yields to 5.5 pounds (2.5 Kg) of grapes per vine. Soils are deep and compact in texture with a balanced pH factor contributing to crisp acidity on the palate. Climatic conditions of these vineyards play a greater role than soils in determining the qualities found in these wines.
What makes Torremorón wines unique?
* 60 to 120 years old Tempranillo vines as opposed to many young vines planted in the DO. * A 50 years old tradition of wine making and an experienced viticulturist.
* Offers great quality at a fair price point, rare in Ribera del Duero.
