Cortijo Rosado
Cortijo Rosado
Cortijo Rosado is a beautiful example of an estate-bottled dry rosé from Rioja. It combines the Tempranillo grape’s body with the Garnacha’s bright acidity. Rioja is Spain’s most prestigious region and for younger or neophyte wine drinkers who want to learn more about this magical, storybook wine region, its grapes and its wines, and enjoy an uncommonly good rosé, there’s no better an introduction than Cortijo Rosado. Cortijo means ‘cottage’ or ‘shack,’ a reference by the emerging young winemaker David Sampedro that his shack makes better wine than most high-flown Chateaux in Rioja. David improves the quality of his wines by doing better work in his vineyards, the place where the grapes come from. David says, “If you want to make better wine, harvest better grapes.” Rather than build a chateau or a beautiful tasting room, he’d rather pay to take care of the only meaningful ingredient, the grapes. Beginning with the 2009 vintage, Cortijo is made with estate grapes. Called el Bull (‘the bull’) by his Spanish friends, David is a complete artist who knows Rioja and his grapes as few other people do.
What makes this wine unique?
A rosé made in the saignée method as free run juice. This is an estate-bottled wine. A dry rosé style that combines Tempranillo and Garnacha. The wine exhibits both body and bright acidity. A versatile example of a food-friendly, pretty rosé from Rioja Alta.
Grape:
50% Tempranillo and 50% Garnacha.
Pairing Suggestions:
This charming rosé is a perfect “quaffer” for easy drinking at “standing up” events like parties or receptions and it’s a great match for casual foods like wrap sandwiches, pizza, quesadillas and soft cheeses.
Vinification and ageing:
At harvest, Garnacha and Tempranillo grapes are picked and brought to the winery to be de-stemmed and crushed. The stems are discarded, and the skins and juice are pumped into a tank. In a few hours, the grape skins begin to separate from the juice. Once the cap has formed, the pink-colored juice is pumped or “bled off” into a tank to ferment. The wine is aged in stainless steel to retain its fresh, expressive aromas and flavors.
Production:
8,000 cases are produced; 3,700 for the U.S.
Location, Soil, Climate:
The vineyards are located in the towns of Hormilla, within the Rioja Alta (Zone 3), Briones and Arenzana, the latter two sited at approximately 568 meters (1,865 ft.) elevation. The soils in Briones are thin red clay and sandy limestone with small particles of thin clay and in Arenzana the soils are sandy with alluvial sediment. For climate, the area’s average temperature from April-October is 61.5ş F with 18.3 inches of yearly rainfall. The moderately warm days and cool nights of this Continental Atlantic climate forces the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines that show brighter aromas and more fruit flavors.
Tasting notes:
Cortijo Rosado has aromas of strawberries and red cherry fruit with complex, dry herb notes. On the palate, the wine is full with silky fruit and soft tannins. With a bright, fresh character, this wine has good structure and a long finish that shows spice and dry herb traces.
