Winery  Wines

Proprietor: Bodegas Viñedos de Aldeanueva founded in 1956, owned by 850 associated vine growers on 6,395 acres of vineyard land (2,600 hectares) comprising 4.2% of DOCa Rioja.

Winemaker / Vineyard Manager: Martin Saenz / Guillermo Martinez.

Location: Zone 4, at 1,230 ft altitude, in the town of Aldeanueva del Ebro, part of the Rioja Baja “lower” sub-region.

Wines Made: Cortijo III Tinto, Cortijo Rose III, Cortijo White III, and Cortijo II Crianza (“Cortijo” farm house).

Climate: Continental Mediterranean climate (Zone 4) hot days with moderately cold nights and rainfall. Average temperature from April to October is 65.9º F. with rainfall of 8.5 inches during the active growing season of the vine. The vineyards are located at 1,230 ft altitude. In relation to Rioja Alta “high”(Climatic Zone 3) Rioja Baja is warmer, dryer and at lower altitude. All these factors culminate in a shorter grape ripening period with lower tannins, balancing acidity and wines with deep purple plum color, silky and soft in texture and accessable to drink young. Also in Zone 4 are DO’s Campo de Borja, Calatayud and Cariñena located south of Rioja Baja and Somontano towards the west.

Soil: Are compact composing of a topsoil of limestone with clay subsoil providing good water retention. 1.5% of organic material gives moderate levels of fertility. In May, early pruning is common practice to reduce yields, achieving greater levels of concentration and intensity of flavor.
