Proprietor: Alfonso Sanz Rojo founded Bodegas Matarredonda in 2000,
owns 62 acres of old Tempranillo vines in the town of El Pego, south west
of Toro. His first vintage was 2001.
Winemaker / Vineyard Managers: Rosa Zarza and Alfonso Sanz.
Location: Located in Zone 2, North West of the Rueda. The vineyards
are in the town of el Pego, at 2,480 ft altitude with a warmer microclimate
within the Toro DO. Grapes grown here usually ripen earlier, avoiding
late September rains.
Wines Made: Juan Rojo and Libranza.
Climate: Continental (Zone 2) cold nights and hot days with moderately
low levels of rainfall. The vineyards of Matarredonda have an average
temperature between April and October of 63.4º F. and 9.1 inches of
rainfall during the active growing season. In contrast, the climate is
warmer than Ribera del Duero and Rueda DO’s encouraging faster grape
ripening with darker pigmentation and lower acidity. The wines process
unique characteristics, with fatter, richer textures, fuller body and with
chewy, denser tannins.
Soils: The vineyards have deep sandy soils, poor in organic matter, good
water drainage and subsoil composed of thick layers of limestone and clay
with good water retention. The surface of warmth retaining sand continues
to ripen the grapes at night and the low pH content gives higher acidity
contributing to the lively fruit character of Matarredonda wines. Due to
the short ripening season, the grapes are harvested in early September
(earlier than usual for the Toro DO) providing consistency from vintage to
vintage by avoiding the damage caused by late September rains.
What makes Matarredonda wines unique?
* Sandy Soils
* Pre-
Phylloxera vines that are 70 to 140 years age old vines producing lower
yields, resulting in greater aromatic fruit intensity and concentration.
* Earlier harvest than many producers in the region thus avoiding late
September rains and picking unripe grapes ex: 2002 vintage.
* Consistent
in quality year after year.
* “Dry farming” with no irrigation with low humidity
giving healthy fruit and low yields of 4.4 pounds (2 kg) of grapes per
vine.
