Winery  Wines

Proprietor: Bodegas Naverán, founded in 1985 by Michel Gilleron Parellada of Swiss origin, owning 1,110 acres of vineyards (1.61% of the High Penedés sub-region) in the town of Torrelavit.

Winemaker / Vineyard Manager: Emili Esteve and Luis Esclassans.

Location: Zone 5, northeast of Spain (few miles south of Barcelona) in the High Penedés sub-region, at an altitude of 827 ft. The High Penedés, credited for growing French grape varieties for many centuries (earliest
reference--the 3rd century A.D. during Spanish Roman occupation). In relation to other wine regions in Zone 5: Penedés is north of Priorat and south of Costa Brava.

Wines made: Naverán Crianza Cabernet Sauvignon, Don Pablo, Manuela, Cava Dama and Cava Brut Reserva (plus other wines not currently imported by Ole Imports).

Climate: High Mediterranean (Zone 5) hot days and moderate temperatures at night.“High” refers to the northern latitude and“Mediterranean” to the proximity to the sea. The Naverán vineyards, at an
altitude of 827 ft. have an average temperature of 66.3º F from April to October and 14.9 inches of rainfall during the active growing season of the vine. Naverán has cooler temperatures than Casteller, due to its higher
altitude (vs. Casteller at 577 ft.). As a result, wines made by Naverán have good skin pigmentation, medium-high aromatics, balanced acidity and polished tannins. Note: Naverán’s climate is warmer than Priorat, Montsant, and cooler than Costa Brava, and Terra Alta.

Soil: The topsoil is composed of limestone and sand with a subsoil of clay. The texture of the topsoil allows for good water drainage and subsoil — good water retention. The medium levels of soil pH and low percentage of
organic substance results in balanced levels of acidity and moderate yields. Even though Naverán has a cooler climate than Casteller, Naverán harvest takes place before Casteller due to the vineyards steeper slopes.

What makes Naverán wines unique?

* Consistency in producing superior quality sparkling wines.

* Entirely estate own vineyards allowing for higher quality control.

* Old vines resulting in smaller yields, increasing concentration and grape quality.

* 85% of the Cavas made by Naverán are sold in France--the mother country of Champagne!

13th Century shrine within the vineyards of Naverán.

White Grapes from Penedés :

Xarello : An early budding Catalan grape providing body and structure.
Parellada : Premium Catalan variety used for the production of Cava provides good acidity – the crunchy crispness of fresh apples and low alcohol.
Macabeu: (syn.Viura) late budding, pale skinned grape and both grows well in hot climates and matures without oxidizing, nose of floral aromas with low acidity.
